Karin Hunt
Specialties: All addictions including sex, pornography, compulsive use of dating sites, and other problematic sexual behaviors, as well as substances (alcohol and drugs). I also work with family members of addicts who are struggling with family member/partners addictive behaviors. Trauma and Partner Betrayal. Group therapy.
My path to clinical work was not exactly direct, yet without question, I feel it is my life’s calling. Throughout my career, I have tried to follow the counsel of a valued mentor who encouraged me to “continue to learn and grow personally throughout my experience in this career.” He didn’t want me to be doing the “same old therapy” 20 years into my career. Here I am, 20 years into my career and I have tried to put that advice to work. I have explored work in adoption and birth parent services, worked with underprivileged families, worked in a hospital ER as a crisis worker, to name a few. I spent time facilitating groups and doing individual and family work in many contexts to enhance my ability to see the bigger picture.
In 2010, I was given an opportunity to move into the area of residential treatment, aka rehab. As the clinical director, I always maintained a full caseload of patients and refined my expertise in diagnosing and treating individuals and their families who have experienced addiction and trauma. I furthered my experience as a trauma certified therapist working with Judy Crane, LCSW of the Refuge and Guest House. This changed my practice in that it opened my mind and heart to the more insidious types of trauma. It helped me increase my empathy and help guide me to be a better support to patients. I feel it sharpened my skills to see further into the patterns that often confuse and frustrate clients.
When my family moved to Texas in 2017, I continued to work inpatient treatment. Here I was introduced to more formal sex addiction training and am now a CSAT Candidate. The training model enhanced my fundamental approach to this struggle and gave me more specific tools and research-based interventions to help patients manage addiction and more importantly, learn healthy sexuality.
I was particularly impacted by the training to help partners/families of sex addicts. Betrayal trauma has so many lasting impacts on individuals and families and not nearly enough resources to help with proper healing. It is my hope to be able to provide more of this.
In my heart, I have always been a therapist. Now, I have the expertise to combine my passion with skills. My hope is to be able to help you and your family benefit from an experienced clinician who can support and guide you to healing. I look forward to meeting you.
